I just found this essay online and wanted to share it with you.
Welcome To Holland by Emily Perl Kingsley
"I am often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with disability - to try to help people who have not shared that unique experience to understand it, to imagine how it would feel. It's like this......
When you're going to have a baby, it's like planning a fabulous vacation trip - to Italy. You buy a bunch of guide books and make your wonderful plans. The Coliseum. The Michelangelo David. The gondolas in Venice. You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It's all very exciting.
After months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands. The stewardess comes in and says, "Welcome to Holland."
"Holland?!?" you say. "What do you mean Holland?? I signed up for Italy! I'm supposed to be in Italy. All my life I've dreamed of going to Italy."
But there's been a change in the flight plan. They've landed in Holland and there you must stay.
The important thing is that they haven't taken you to a horrible, disgusting, filthy place, full of pestilence, famine and disease. It's just a different place.
So you must go out and buy new guide books. And you must learn a whole new language. And you will meet a whole new group of people you would never have met.
It’s just a different place. It's slower-paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy. But after you've been there for a while and you catch your breath, you look around.... and you begin to notice that Holland has windmills....and Holland has tulips. Holland even has Rembrandts.
But everyone you know is busy coming and going from Italy... and they're all bragging about what a wonderful time they had there. And for the rest of your life, you will say "Yes, that's where I was supposed to go. That's what I had planned." And the pain of that will never, ever, ever, ever go away...because the loss of that dream is a very very significant loss.
But...if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn't get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things...about Holland."
How perfect is that?! You know, I've been to Italy. And it is beautiful, breathtaking and wonderful. I'd love to visit again someday, if you get my drift....but for now, I'm really happy being in Holland. :)

October 31, 2008:
Hahaha! I bought this costume last October when it was on super-de-duper clearance. I just knew our baby was going to be cute enough to pull it off! Happy Halloween everyone! :)

While Gina was here, we had a baby shower for her and Jodi came up to spend some time as well. Gina got lots of wonderful things for her baby, including this wonderful hand knit hat from her friend, KT. I asked KT to make one for Joshua, so hopefully I'll get that soon and put up pictures.
It was such a beautiful weekend here, we decided to go apple picking and enjoy being outside. Joshua, as usual, loved it.

Jumping is still his favorite activity, followed closely by standing and taking steps (while completely supported of course!).
The other thing he's obsessed with is lights. Light fixtures, light bulbs, anything that shines. Sometimes he'll stop mid jump to look at the light fixture in the dining room!
Ben thinks he's going to be an electrician. Aunt Jodi says he may be the next Louis Comfort Tiffany! Whatever he will be, I love watching him develop into it. :)
Sitting there all nice and then BAM! Just look at how my nephew attacks my son! :)
Poor Joshua is defenseless (and apparently surprised) by Timothy's attempt to remove his shirt!
HAHAHAHA! Ok, so maybe I rearranged the photos a little to frame poor Timmy. In reality, Timothy is so , so gentle with Josh. Every time they get together, Timothy strokes Josh's arm or his face. He's such a sweet little boy. Sorry I framed you, Timmy! Auntie Jamie loves you. :)
He tries really hard to get the pacifier in his mouth and I have no doubt that in a few weeks he'll have it down. He still loves to stand & jump and will even take a few steps if you lead him!
We work on sitting and his core strength, work on reaching and grasping, work on laying on his tummy and even crawling!
Last week, Joshua "crawled" across the living room. It wasn't a true crawl, but he was doing reciprocating leg movements which was awesome! He sort of pushed himself across the carpet with his legs, but his arms were still down & his cheek was on the carpet. :) Funny image, huh?
with one little hitch. In the past week, Joshua has only had two dirty diapers (and they've both made me gag/nearly throw up!). I'm calling this little hitch Poopwatch '08. :) I've tried giving him straight apples, straight pears, pear juice, apple juice...all the things that are supposed to make babies go. So we decided to try sitting in a warm bath. While it didn't make Joshua poop, he did enjoy the experience.
Rebecca, I know how you love the rolls, so this picture is just for you:

Even if he does look like a rusty old tow truck from time to time, he's still my little stud muffin and the cutest baby on the planet!!

and then decided it was time to entertain everyone in the building with his range of facial expressions and his contagious laughter.

and put his baby to bed to rest for another three weeks until it's time for the next step.
